Genes and Techs

In Arklain we offer a new system for those that feel 100 levels of the same old levelling stuff and quests gaining just the same gold and items over and over just wasn't doing it for them. Gene and Tech modifications should brighten things up somewhat.

What is a Gene?
A Gene in Arklain is special serum made by extracting the triggering gene for a special ability from a willing (Sometimes unwilling) host. Once used, the Gene changes the structure of a person (Sometimes appearance. These are noted in GeneMaps) giving them special abilities and stats.

How can I get a Gene?
There are new skills and Feats available to help you get one. But the most cost and time effective method is through questing. To find Genes you must first find the laboratories that used to study them. Each Lab stores just one type of Gene and often less than 3 Vials (Doses) of it. Collect map pieces to complete a map then follow the directions to find them. See GeneMaps for costs on buying maps.

How can I get a Gene without using the Maps?
You would need levels the Genetics Skill, the ConstructCyborg and the GeneTech Feats, if you're trying to imbue yourself with the Gene you will also need a Cyborg familiar (ImprovedFamiliar Feat, or a willing friend with the Genetics Skill). You must also have a map to a lab with a Gene of the same color as the one you're trying to extract. Say your Gene is Red-#1, then you need a Red GeneMap of any # or Level because the experiment must be conducted in that kind of Lab.

Once you have met the requirements you need to find a host with the desired ability (Note: Only abilities that are Genetic can be extracted this way. Feats such as SneakAttack cannot be gained thus unless 1, the other person has the feat through race selection, or 2, it is a Gene they embedded into themselves.)

The host needs to be kept captive for 1d3 days during which they will lose a fair amount of blood. Host must make a fort check every day (DC 20, can be replaced by a heal check from another person) or fall unconscious. If the host becomes unconscious they lose one stat score to Con permanently (Restoration spell will restore this loss). And the process is halted for the day even if the Host regains consciousness that day.

If you're successful in keeping your Host in some reasonable order of health then in the end of the 1d3 + failed days you will have 1d3 Genes. (Same Gene, 3 doses. Must declare to DM which Gene you are trying for.)

What is a Tech?
A Tech is similar to a Gene in that it changes the structure of a person (Sometimes appearance. These are noted in TechMaps) giving them special abilities and stats. However, only Constructs and Cyborgs can use Techs and have them added to themselves. They are like biotechnological upgrades.

How can I get a Tech?
Since the last war the Council has become cautious with technological advancements. To find Techs you must first find the laboratories that used to study them. Each Lab stores just one type of Tech and only one application of it. Collect map pieces to complete a map then follow the directions to find them. See TechMaps for costs on buying maps.
